Multi-Level Marketing is a modified compensation variation of the original business corporate structure on which all world business has been built for centuries. It is also the hierarchical model on which all organizations throughout have been built including the great military structures, and governance models of every country in history.
When you go to work for a company as a new trainee, you almost always start at the entry level where you are trained to learn all about the company, what it does, and what your role is initially in its overall structure. You then learn a specific task, become good at it, and hopefully become promoted to the next level up. When you are promoted, you may or may not e given some level of responsibility for the new trainees that have come in after you - but you certainly are not likely to receive a portion of their paycheck.
That is where multi-level marketing or Network Marketing differs. The significant difference in this growth oriented structure is the focus on bringing in (recruiting) and training new people, and consequently paying you an override or oversight compensation for finding, training, and developing your new people into your organization. With The Atlan Group program, you are enouraged to find (recruit), train, and develop up to seven levels of people below you over time - with a nominal amount of compensation being directed to you by every person in your seven level organization.
And because you are encouraging all of the people below you (in your 'downline') to do the same, they are helping you build your team at each of these levels. This type of business was mainstreamed by the Amway Corporation of Grand Rapids Michigan which was started in 1959 by two partners in one of their garages, and has grown such that in 2008 it was an almost $ 8 Billion/year organization.
While network marketing has always been a 'people intensive' business, the advent of the internet has made this a much more viable way in which to do business using a variety of technical tools to contact people you otherwise would never know. The old MLM business approach of recruiting your family, friends, church, and everyone they all knew, has now been replaced with social networking sites, blogs, marketing tools, and mailing programs that make this a very viable business model in a whole new way.
